The Tumour Institute of Tuscany has entrusted the Centre for the Study and Prevention of Tumours(C.S.P.O.) with cancer prevention actions..

The Centre for the Study and Prevention of Tumours is a scientific institute of the Region of Tuscany whose aim is to perform studies in order to identify risk factors and assess the effectiveness of prevention activities.

The Region of Tuscany has also given other important functions to the Centre for the Study and Prevention of Tumours:

• care (physical rehabilitation, psychological support and follow-up of cancer patients),
• epidemiological assessment and quality assurance in the field of tumour prevention, including training of healthcare professionals,
• management of the Regional Mortality Registry and the Tumour Registry of Tuscany.

The Centre for the Study and Prevention of Tumours coordinates 250 professionals who carry out research projects and work in the field, in close cooperation with the Local Health Authorities.

The mortality rate reduction registered in Tuscany in the past few years for some tumours is also due to the high-quality regional screening programmes.
