About us
The Tumour Institute of Tuscany (ITT) is a network-based Institute conducting research work on tumours and providing healthcare services to cancer patients in Tuscany. In each Local Health Authority there is at least one of its clinics and its operating and scientific management is located in Florence.
The Institute's network of services has been designed to meet patients' needs at the level which is closest to them, and to choose at the same time the best treatment, coordinating all the necessary competences and services available in the community.
The Tumour Institute of Tuscany is founded on three fundamental principles:
- Single governance system
- Standard healthcare pathways
- Centres specialized in the treatment of cancer patients
Given its network structure, and through the adoption of homogeneous diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, the Institute provides optimized treatment not only for patients referred to a specialized hospital, but to all citizens in Tuscany.
If it is legitimate to hope that this approach improves treatment results, it is certainly the pre-condition to conduct clinical research, since the identification of relatively homogeneous groups of patients is essential to detect genetic and non-genetic risk factors and to establish prognostic correlations that guide patient-focussed treatment options.
These protocols are continuously monitored and periodically updated.
